Smoky Glass Is The Best Antique Trend Right Now

Once upon a time, smoked glass was seen in many homes, a vintage trend that is coming back in full force. A technique that's seen in so many of today's trending pendant lights, glassware, and even coffee tables, it's clear that smoked glass is making a comeback — although not just in the nostalgic way you might think. There are some really obvious differences between retro-inspired smoked glass decor and this newer wave of pieces that feel more in line with a contemporary and refined aesthetic. I adore a good hunt for vintage and antique pieces, but I don't always have time to dedicate to perusing shops, though. I have gathered some pieces that will satisfy this renewed trend, while with a more streamlined, modern approach.

West One Bathrooms Ltd. in London, created this palette and tones that needed to be warm and soft but at the same time refined and blunt. They used a bespoke smoked 10mm glass floor to ceiling shower screen to divide the shower area from the rest of the room.

Two stunning bath designs by Evgeny Garchu, a Russian interior designer from Moscow. He perfectly enhances the smoked glass with his dramatic and bold interiors.

Smoked glass comes in many colors but for furniture and architectural pieces primarily brown or black, occasionally some muted colors of plum, blues, or greens, with each hue providing a different look for your living space. While lovers of the eclectic 1970s style might lean toward incorporating shapely smoked glass accessories with a warm brown or amber tint, those who veer more toward contemporary design are discovering how smokey black glass can give their homes a soft yet sleek finish.

Naturally tinted by being held to a flame, these fragile sheets of glass get their smoldering look from coats of smoke residue. The beautifully foggy treatment has changed the way we think about traditionally translucent objects—from shower walls to wine decanters to coffee tables. After all, who doesn’t love a little mystery?

Sophisticated smoked glass with its subtle, understated appearance is right at the top of every designer’s must-have list right now. If you love the clean, reflective look of glass in your home but worry about 'overdoing it', smoked glass is a finish that you’ll want to consider. There's something undeniably masculine and mid-century about smoke glass. The look gives just about anything a bit of edge, which helps balance out the metallics I love to use in designs.
